Benefits of Maintenance Therapy

Bipolar disorder is a lifelong illness, so a long-term (maintenance) medication can be an important part of your treatment. Some maintenance medications do not take away the initial feelings of depression or mania you may have experienced. Instead, they help keep the mood episodes from coming back.

Understanding bipolar depression
Bipolar disorder generally includes periods of depression and mania or hypomania. In many cases, depression is the most pronounced symptom because it occurs earlier in the course of the illness, occurs more often, and lasts longer.

In a 12.8-year study by the National Institute of Mental Health of 146 patients followed during treatment, depression was the most frequently reported symptom (31.9%):

In another clinical study, patients treated for bipolar disorder were depressed for as many as 121 days in a year. That's about 33% of the time.

These findings highlight the importance of long-term treatment for bipolar disorder--particularly for depression.
